Distance on clue

From: (john@johnsblog.com) | Date: 2015-09-13 17:19:10 UTC-07:00

I'm planning to add round trip distance on clues. Any suggestions on how it should look. I'd list finders to be able to restrict clues to distances that they would like to see. Just a number of miles or groupings like 1-2mi?

Can you do both a fill in the blank and small ranges otherwise I'd like the miles with a disclaimer they are approximate.

Keep is simple, Choi...... but I like your idea.

I think a drop down of every number < 1 through 20+ would be good.  Also, either make this optional or have a space for “I JUST DON’T KNOW!”

It probably would be easiest to have drop down list with:  <0.5 mile, 0.5-1 mile, 1-2 miles, 2-5 miles, & >5 miles since you just want a range for search purposes, not exact mileage (which clue giver could put in clues) and some planters might not know exact mileage anyway.  Not sure if there should be more or less range choices, but I figure the <0.5 mile would take care of drive-bys, the next two probably still need to be small range for those that won't hike more than 2 miles, then after that the range can be bigger since if you are willing to hike over 2 miles, you probably would do 5, and if willing to do over 5, you don't care how far it is.  Of course, this doesn't take into account terrain (e.g. steep slope vs flat), but I think it at least gives boxers an idea of how long it will take to find the box.  Good idea!

Maybe match the options on AQ...

I like the idea of specific mileage, with the caveat of "approximate".  If the range is too wide, it can be hard to decide if you have time to try for the box.  A difference of 2-3 miles can represent an hour on the trail.  So 5 miles might be doable in remaining daylight, but 8 would not.

So if individual numbers aren't used, I'd at least like to see no more than 2 miles difference in each range. (1 mile or less, 1-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, 10-12, 12-14, 14-16, 16-18, 18-20, 20+

Thanks!

I've started implementing the distance feature. You can set it when editing a clue and use it as a filter when searching. I still need to work on showing it in search results and the clue page.

I've finished the basics. Let me know what you think. Happy to add more refinements later. It's not an exact match for AQ, but similar.

I like it, but you might want to add another one of < .1 mile for boxes less than 176 yards.  If you do a search on a specific category (e.g. .5 mile), will it only return boxes that have that specific hike distance or will it return all boxes up to that distance?  I think the latter would be best.  Also, when adding new clues is the hiking distance required?  It probably shouldn't be since sometimes the planter might want to keep that information secret.  Thanks.

I used the .1 for anything up to that amount.
I agree there should be a not stated option

Yes, .1 is meant to be 0 to .1 mi. Similarly 1 mi is meant as .5 to 1 mi. More work would be needed to search for 0 to 1 mi, for example.

I've tweaked the letterbox search page to use checkboxes to select the Hike Distance ranges that you'd like to see. If you only want to see clues marked as .5 mi or less, you would need to uncheck all of the checkboxes except .1 mi and .5 mi.

I like it, but I would suggest having the results display on a new tab so that you could adjust your search criteria without starting from scratch, since currently the search page gets refreshed when you go back.

Or I could look into saving your last setting...

Only problem with that is I like having the default be all checked the first time you enter the Search page, so wouldn't want it to remember what I did yesterday.

I just tried searching with a selection of checkboxes, looking at some stories, then using the Back button to get to the search page again and see that it remembered all of my search options, including the check boxes.
